Brief History of the Department

Agricultural Education was a unit of the Department of Vocational Teacher Education, which was one of the earliest Departments established in 1964 under Ford foundation Project grant in the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. From inception, Department of Vocational Teacher education was one of the three Departments that made up the Faculty of Education then. The Department of Vocational Teacher Education was made up of broad units, namely; Agricultural Education, Business Education, Computer Education, Home Economics Education and Industrial Technical Education. As a pioneer Department of Vocational and Technical Education in Nigeria, almost all the institutions that run Vocational and Technical Education programme in Nigeria at the university, polytechnic, and colleges of Education levels are administered by the products of the department.

The former Department of Vocational Teacher Education offered both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in the five occupational areas as earlier mentioned. In 2015, the Department of Vocational Teacher Education was granted a faculty status by a decision of the University of Nigeria Senate and was carved out of the Faculty of Education with the name “Faculty of Vocational and Technical Education”. All the units that made up the then Department were upgraded to the status of full-fledged Departments of Agricultural Education, Business Education, Computer Education, Home Economics and Industrial technical Education. In the same 2015, when the Department of Vocational Teacher Education sought for the upgrading of the Department to a faculty status, the Department of Agricultural Education was approved as one of the Departments in the faculty of vocational and Technical Education.
